March 15-19, 2024 – The First of Two Beautiful Balearic Islands!

We left Sardinia on March 13th to take the 200 nm trip to Minorca. We got to Minorca on the 15th. We’d heard that the Balearic Islands were beautiful, and we were not disappointed! In fact, we were rather stunned by their beauty!

Our first anchorage in Minorca was Calo Roig. We arrived at 2:30 a.m., so we didn’t know what it looked like until the next morning.

We cannot say enough good things about this anchorage. It is gorgeous, has a nice walking path on shore, and a beautiful beach. We anchored easily (even in the dark) in sand. Good holding. We took the dinghy ashore and enjoyed the short hike.

It was a delightful stop, just what we needed, but we only had six nm to go to our next location, so we went there later that day.

Our next destination was Mo Llevant Marina Mahon, Menorca. We had hoped to have someone look at the starboard engine (still shaking too much) but that didn’t pan out. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our visit. How can one not enjoy any visit to the Balearics?? Our time here consisted largely of walking about town and ending the afternoon with an adult beverage at a welcoming bar/restaurant.

We left Mahon on March 18th. Our first anchorage as we moved south around the island was Cala Covas. We anchored in sand at 17 feet with 50 feet of chain. We skipped the bridle due to low winds. We’d read that many boats take lines ashore but we didn’t feel the need. It might have been because we were the only boat.

Let me take this time to tell you that one of my dreams was that we would enter an anchorage and be the only boat. This was a dream come true! I think it would be safe to describe it as a sailor’s dream anchorage.

We spent the night here and headed for our next anchorage – only 11 nm away – the next day, March 19th.

Our next anchorage – Cala Macarella – was another favorite. Another sailor’s dream! We took the dinghy around pretty much everywhere to see the views. We did not go ashore.

And now, some views from the dinghy! I told Michael I wanted to row so as not to rush it.

Michael was taking pictures and he told me that I always made a face when I was sightseeing. He described it as looking up with my mouth open. Sounds about right. So I decided to show him some of my other faces.

We again left a perfectly wonderful anchorage to move to another one. We wanted to be closer to the next island before we sailed there. This anchorage wasn’t particularly pretty, but it met our needs.

We will share our visit to Mallorca in the next post.
