Saturday, May 6, 2017, Day 14, Sailing from Antigua to Madeira

Let’s start with yesterday.

The wind returned! We sailed all night with just the Genoa. At 9:30 a.m., we added the Screecher to sail wing-on-wing. By noon, the wind had picked up to 20 knots, so we furled in the Screecher. It then began to rain. By the time the sail and sheets were secure, Yulia and I were soaked through on the bottom half of our bodies, as we’d neglected to don rain pants.

Kirill then deployed the main, and we made nice progress at 7 to 9 knots. We were also sailing in the right direction. Bonus!

Back to today.

Our midnight to 4:00 a.m. watch was more eventful than usual. Wind from 20 to 28 knots, averaging 24. Waves came from behind and just abaft abeam. The moon was about 3/4 full and shone from time to time. When the moon isn’t shining, it is pitch black. It was chilly.

We had slept little before our watch due to the boat’s movements. It is usually loud in our berth, but more so last night. By the time we hit the sack at 4:00 a.m., we were tired enough to sleep through it. 🙂

It is 11:00 a.m. as we write this. The wind is blowing at 28 to 32 knots. Waves are up to four meters. It is partly sunny. No main, one reef in the Genoa. We are heading 102 degrees.

Ah, the sun broke through! It caused me (Cindy) to burst into song: Sunshine on My Shoulders. Fitting.
